A few days ago a vital medicine (Avastin) was banned by the authorities. This injection is mostly used in the treatment of cancer but is also used for those suffering from eye diseases like macular degeneration.

A childhood friend of mine (Adil Khory) is suffering needlessly as the injection is no longer available due to its misuse in Punjab. Some unscrupulous traders were diluting the injection and not storing it properly, as a result of which about sixty or seventy people became blind. True to form, the government banned its use, despite cancer and eye hospitals being full. Today I read a news item according to which the injection has been approved for cancer treatment but not for eye diseases.

It will be very difficult for those suffering from eye diseases to get relief unless the ban is lifted. But knowing the mindset of our civil servants, I doubt if that will happen soon.
