APROPOS the editorial ‘Draconian cyber law’
(Aug 12). What if someone hacked a person’s email account and sent threatening
or controversial messages to anyone he or she wanted?
In the past, I have received emails from some
people I know, saying that they were stranded in distant countries like South
Africa or Nigeria and asking me to deposit money online into bank accounts.
Later, I found that their email accounts had been hacked and they became aware
of this only when their relatives and friends contacted them.
While it would be possible for such a victim
to prove that he or she did not send the offensive emails or those asking for
financial help, he or she would be under severe mental stress while trying to
prove his or her innocence.
