Freeze
them out
This refers to the news story, ‘Drive to broaden
tax base faces major setback’ (October 29). The FBR cannot be entirely blamed
for this because every government has displayed a lack of will to enforce rule
of law.
Every few years, an amnesty scheme is announced and habitual tax-evaders take advantage of the offer. In reality, this has further encouraged tax evasion in the country. In the case of non-receipt of tax notices by more than 20,000 evaders, the government has only to announce that it will freeze their bank accounts and put on the Exit Control List the names of those whose correct addresses are not mentioned in their CNICs. The culprits will immediately rush to get themselves registered with the FBR.
