Pakistan's debt cycle and electricity theft

The debt cycle

Published in The News on June 19, 2013

With reference to your editorial ‘Getting brighter’ (June 17), it is not enough for the government to pay off the entire circular debt in one go – probably by printing notes. What is required is to recover the outstanding dues from defaulters.

By simply ignoring defaulters and continuing their electricity supply, the government risks accumulation of another circular debt in the near future. Defaulters and electricity thieves should be made to pay their dues even if they belong to the ruling party. There is no other alternative.
