Politics
of protest
With reference to a
Newspost letter, ‘A place to protest’ (March 7), the writer suggests: “Separate
venues be marked for this purpose where people can protest”. This is easier
said than done. In Karachi, for instance, whenever a strike is called, people
go on the rampage, burning vehicles and forcing shops to close down.
Even though some criminals
are arrested, they are never brought to court but are released (probably at the
insistence of influential political groups). The police should be asked to
provide details of those arrested as well as reasons for not taking any further
action.
