Without taxes

This is with reference to Mumtaz Bhutto’s article ‘Hollow talk of democracy’ (January 25). According to him, no taxes are levied in Singapore. I’ve heard this from others as well. Obviously, there is some misunderstanding here, because no state can exist without taxes.

In Singapore, 3.5 percent to 20 percent income tax is levied on individuals with incomes above 20,000 Singaporean dollars. Also, besides other taxes, a goods and service tax is also in place while the corporate income tax is 17 percent.
