Women as equals
Sir: This is with reference to your editorial, ‘Pervasive violence against women’ (Daily Times, August 8, 2011). We should not be surprised at policemen going berserk when they see bare-armed women. They have, after all, been brought up to believe that all unveiled and working women are agents of the devil. We should be grateful that the police officer did not kill the woman on the spot. As to your comment, “It is time for Pakistani society to change these bestial trends and start treating women as equal citizens”, I am afraid this will not happen in the lifetimes of all Pakistanis alive today. We will have to wait another 100 years before all Pakistani males start thinking of women as being equal to men.
