Why rent?
Sir: The government’s plan to rent power plants looks like another big scam. Under the plan, the government will give away 15 million dollars — the cost of the plant — even before it is brought to Pakistan. Then, WAPDA will pay 110 million dollars as rent. Wouldn’t it make more sense to use that money to pay what is owed to the Independent Power Producers (IPPs)? The fact is that WAPDA, KESC and the IPPs can produce enough power to end load shedding, and there is no need for rental power plants; unless, of course, kickbacks are involved!
