chilling statements

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Sir: I was amazed when I read that KS Sudarshan, the current supremo of the hard-line Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), thinks India should start preparing for nuclear war with Pakistan, and that he feels this may become inevitable. This is a man very close to the BJP (which was in power when India started the overt nuclear race in South Asia with its 1998 tests), and could be very close to Indian power centres should the BJP emerge strongly in the coming elections. One would not be surprised if an Al Qaeda officer made such an irresponsible and dangerous remark, but that a prominent Indian politician wielding immense political clout has done so is chilling to say the least.

And now that a Hindu extremist organisation has made its stance on nuclear warfare clear, perhaps the world should ask India to guarantee, just like it asked Pakistan, that its nuclear arsenal is not in danger of being seized by extremists like the RSS chief.
